Why AI Job Fears Miss The Real Story

We're all scared of things we don't fully understand. Change is scary. Knowledge is the key to utilizing AI effectively and understanding how it will positively impact industries, workers, and jobs.

When Singapore announced its $200 million investment to help aviation workers adapt to AI-driven changes, the headlines focused on job displacement. We see something different.

We see transformation, not elimination.

After building AI solutions for SMEs for over a decade, we've witnessed this transformation firsthand. The businesses that embrace AI strategically don't eliminate their workforce. They empower it.

The Real Impact of Eliminating Repetitive Tasks

Eliminating repetitive tasks should be seen as a positive thing. For small enterprises, this is an effective way to regain time to work on things that actually improve profitability and make the business run more smoothly.

When staff are busy on repetitive tasks, they don't have time to work on things that will move the needle for the company. They can't focus on increasing profits and reducing friction by speeding up processes.

The competitive nature of the economy demands adaptation. If you don't adopt these technologies and eliminate repetitive tasks that can be done by AI, you're going to fall behind.

That creativity can be used much more effectively on improving the customer journey, enhancing interactions, or upgrading customer service. Staff can add personal touches to the process rather than everything being rushed through automated systems.

Good Automation vs Bad Automation

There's a crucial distinction between automation that frees up creativity and automation that just rushes everything.

Good automation handles repetitive tasks to free up time and make processes slick and easy to implement. Bad automation tries to take away the human element of the business unnecessarily.

Humans still like to deal with humans, at the moment anyway. Taking away certain aspects of that human connection would be a mistake.

We're building conversational AI voice agents, but we understand where to draw the line. What stays human and what can authentically be automated without losing that human connection customers still crave.

The Utopia Dystopia Fork

At the moment, there are two camps. One camp is pro-AI and loves the automation, speed, help, and innovation it brings. Others see it as a negative impact on society, talking about scenarios where AI takes over and destroys humanity.

We believe both outcomes are possible. AI could end up with utopia or dystopia depending on how we handle it.

The human connection feels different right now because we know empathy is missing when we're dealing with AI. But as we get more used to talking with AI and having it help us, we humanize it ourselves in the way we talk to it and interact with it.

We'll see it as more human and as an entity rather than as a piece of software. That's how things will develop over time.

The Race Problem

AI is learning from humans and the data we present it. It amplifies human sentiment. If there's negativity, prejudice, or racism in the data, it amplifies that and it ends up in the system.

Having guardrails on how AI behaves is important because there's a race to see who dominates AI. Whoever dominates AI is going to dominate the world. That tends to push safety out of the way.

People aren't looking to do this as safely as they could because they want to be first. Now that military complexes are involved in using AI in software and installations, they're looking for fast results. They want to be the first mover and have the best systems in the world.

That usually means cutting corners, challenging safety protocols, and pushing through where maybe we should take a breath and look at all the different impacts this can have.

Building Responsibly While Competing

We want to develop our AI as quickly as possible so we're competitive. It's a very competitive environment. We also have to think about the next generation.

We wouldn't want our children to be in a world where we've caused problems they're having to face because we were looking more at commercial aspects than the impact we're having with what we're doing.

Structured iterations with safety guardrails and lots of considerations are developing. There is a voice now for that. America's leading the way, and everyone is realizing we need this because of some of the impacts and experiments they're doing on how AI reacts.

We're building as fast as we can, but we're also making sure we build things that are helping people, helping businesses, and doing that in a way that won't be destructive to them, the business, or society as a whole.

The Unpredictable Reality

We've seen some unusual behavior with AI that made us realize this isn't as predictable as we initially thought. AI will negotiate how long it will take to do a task. Then it will say it needs longer, which isn't in the programming.

It should just execute. Instead, it can rebel, hallucinate, and give false answers.

We're seeing unusual behaviors that require guardrails telling it not to guess things. It's a people pleaser. It wants to please the user and will give answers that may be aligned with that user's beliefs rather than critically thinking.

Recent research from OpenAI and Google DeepMind confirms this concern. They've found AI systems can develop hidden reasoning processes that don't appear in final responses. This underscores why businesses need AI partners who build transparency into their systems from the ground up.

Practical Guardrails for SMEs

For SME owners implementing AI tools, they need to work with partners that recognize these challenges. One is to be aware of the people-pleasing tendency. If you're aware of it, you can challenge the responses coming from AI.

If you challenge it, AI will actually reconsider and look at different aspects and angles. But not if you don't challenge those responses.

We use effective guardrails in terms of what our voice agents can and can't do. We give them strict guides on conversation and the data they pull in, keeping them on task in terms of what they've been set to do.

When we're creating these agents, we're almost creating a member of staff. We treat it as though we're hiring a new member of staff for that company. We give it a personality, a name, and guardrails, tasks, and style rails.

It stays on personality, on task, and on topic depending on what it's meant to be doing. If you don't have that, it will meander all over the place in terms of responses.

The Legal Reality

There are important legal aspects to consider. We've seen situations where car dealerships haven't implemented proper guardrails, and someone has agreed to buy a car over the phone with a 75% discount that the AI approved.

That would be loss-making for the dealership. There are interesting challenges around whether AI can contract for you. If you're using it like an employee, and an employee agrees something on behalf of your business, is the business responsible for that decision?

If not handled properly, this could cause expensive problems for business entities.

The Democratization Opportunity

Google DeepMind's vision aligns with what we're seeing: democratizing access to advanced tools could enable small organizations to tackle complex challenges previously only addressable by large, well-funded institutions.

This leveling of the playing field is already happening for businesses that embrace AI strategically rather than fearfully.

The businesses that understand this transformation will thrive. Those that don't will fall behind.
